Gatwick Express - BAR UK gives a cautious welcome to the latest consultation

Proposals to scrap the Gatwick Expressed were first announced two years ago.

BAR UK is pleased that its efforts, and those of other members of the airline community, and overseas diplomatic channels, have been successful to date in suspending those plans.

In the latest development, the Department for Transport has just published its consultation document 'Implementation of the Brighton Main Line Route Utilisation Strategy' (RUS).

Commenting on this new consultation, the Chief Executive of BAR UK, Mike Carrivick, said 'In some ways, we are happy that the constructive objections made to the original proposals have been effective, and that the Gatwick Express continues to provide a premium rail service for all of its thousands of users.

'However, we are disappointed that, after two years debate and discussions, a final decision to permit the continued operation of this great product has yet to be made.

'We now need to assess the options set out in the document, and consult with our own members before we are in a position to provide our considered response.'

The consultation closes on 22 December 2006.
