BAR UK welcomes changes to hand baggage security measures BAR UK welcomes today's announcement from the Department for Transport (DfT) concerning changes in the size of cabin baggage that will be permitted with effect from tomorrow, (0200hrs on 22 September). Passengers will be permitted one piece that does not exceed the IATA-recommended dimensions of 56cm x 45 cm x 25 cm, whereas, previously, hand baggage dimensions could not exceed 45cm x 35cm x 16 cm. Greater flexibility also exists regarding the carriage of musical instruments, although a full ban remains on taking liquids, pastes and gels through security channels. Commenting on today's announcement, Mike Carrivick, Chief Executive of BAR UK, said: 'Today's announcement by the DfT is welcomed by our airlines and their passengers. It also demonstrates that the DfT, who have been in regular consultation with the industry since 10 August, does genuinely listen, and is fully aware of its sentiments and aspirations. 'There is always a balance between the heightening security arrangements on one hand, and the needs of the travelling public on the other. We are confident that these changes strike a good balance. 'The security risks imposed by liquids, gels and pastes are recognised. However, it is hoped that some leeway may ultimately be obtained in respect of toilet kits, the banning of which still presents problems, both to travellers and security staff.' For editors: ...
