BAR UK welcomes the faster immigration procedures provided by IRIS

BAR UK, which represents 92 scheduled airlines in the UK, welcomes the introduction of the Iris Recognition Immigration System (IRIS) pioneered by the Home Office.

IRIS forms part of its e-Borders programme, and will facilitate immigration procedures for frequent travellers into the UK. Those registering for the scheme will have their details, including a photograph of the pattern of their iris, recorded on to a secure database.

Once registered, all a passenger has to do on coming back into the country is to go straight to the special IRIS immigration channel on the immigration control, and have their iris pattern photographed. The entry barrier will then open once recognition has been established.

Welcoming this system, BAR UK's Chairman, Mike Carter of Continental Airlines, said "At a time when airport formalities are getting more demanding, the introduction of IRIS is very welcome, and will considerably reduce the stress of arrivals formalities, and provide a far better level of service to our members' passengers. We look forward to a successful pilot period, and full implementation on a permanent basis."

The Home Office have a website for further information at www.iris.gov.uk.
